Recession Proof Jobs
The term “recession proof” could probably start a big debate. There is a school of thought that claims no industry is recession proof. There is another school of thought that would argue the point. On Monday, CNN Money published an article that suggests there are three industries that are “hiring and thriving.”
The Education, health services and accounting fields are all hiring while many industries are laying people off from work. Visit Friday’s post, Is Your Job Safe?, to hear what young professionals are saying about job security and these industries.
Education jobs will increase because people consider new careers when they are out of work and that may mean a return to the classroom. According to the Labor Department, the education industry added nearly 10,000 jobs in November. Health services is a growing industry due to the aging population. Accounting jobs are on the rise due to the upcoming tax season.
Would you reconsider your industry if you lost your job?

My answer is an unqualified YES. I’m a job now that pays well and is stable even in down times, but that doesn’t mean I’m happy. I’m at that stage in my career where I’m seriously considering down-shifting or going solo. Getting fired would just put me over the hump.
I have similar sentiments. Before the economic downturn, I considered myself pretty happy but I’ve had entrepreneurial aspirations. Now I’m at a point where I am rethinking everything! Instead of taking a leap of faith with it, I may get pushed off the cliff– too! I know a lot of Millennials with the same spirit.
Yes, I spun my newspaper career into a marketing/PR career a few years ago, thankfully. I used to think newspapers’ main problem was poor pay, but now they can’t even offer job security.
Do not go into a field because of any kind of economic incentives. This is the worst mistake you can make. I’m still paying off loans for careers (yes careers, I’m a complete moron) that I got into due to “recession proof” or some other type of slick nonsense.
If you do what you love, you will be better at it. The best in any career will always succeed. Success will bring money. No job is gone forever. There _are_ still buggy whip makers out there, they are just harder jobs to find. I’m sure those who went into it out of love of buggy love are very happy and successful.
Those who went into the cassette tape industry are ruined unless they jumped to a new career quick.
