The Top 10 Free iPhone Apps for Young Professionals
“It’s just a trendy new device.”
“No one will use it for business.”
“Executives will still use blackberries and it’s a waste of money, why should I get one?”
I have heard all of these quotes from my friends and family about the new iPhone but, guess who I talked iPhone tips and tricks with last night? The CIO (Cheif Information Officer) and CTO (Cheif Technology Officer) of one of the businesses in the Fortune 10 company I work for. I made my return on investment right there just being able to relate as a technologist with the executives at the event (a great way to accelerate your career as a futurist). It’s not just the tech leaders either, they were emailing the CEO on his new iPhone at the end of the event.
iPhones are not just for fun and the user base is far more powerful than “trendy Apple hipsters” so, if you have an iPhone, how can you leverage it to best develop as a young professional? Here are the ten best apps I have found for young professionals:
1. A Personal Assistant (PageOnce) - How can you hope to manage project finances if you can’t manage your own? This application brings all your financial, wireless and other accounts into one easily accessible dashboard on your iPhone. Downside: You need to set up the account on a PC.
2. Mobile News Network - Know what everyone is talking about around the coffee machine. This little app is a great way to catch up on the latest local and international news. It supplements my Google Reader with more localized general news allowing me to quickly connect with whats going on even when I am traveling.
3. Jott for iPhone - Since most of the Newly Corporate population doesn’t have an administrative assistant, we need to leverage our time on the road and away from the office as much as possible. Jott allows you to dictate emails, notes and ideas on the fly (emails and text are being integrated into the app, great for to do lists too!).
4. Yelp - Going out to lunch with a client and need to find a good place close by? Need a gas station fast on your way to a sales call? In a foreign city for a conference and looking for a fun place to grab a drink? Look no further than the location-enabled Yelp. This application will locate gas stations, bars, restaurants, barber shops and pretty much anything else you want around you and provides access to others reviews of the locations to boot.
5. Palringo Instant Messenger - Everyone uses instant messaging and frankly, it’s disappointing this type of functionality was there in the iPhone from the beginning. Palringo allows you to access pretty much any instant messaging platform whether it’s your old high school friends on AIM or your business and college friends who have moved to Google Talk. You can even connect to you corporate messaging system if your system is XMPP compatible.
6. SportsTap - Like it or not, people at the office talk sports. You don’t have to keep up with them but a rudimentary knowledge of the latest scores and events can make conversations and networking that much easier. SportsTap is great way to keep up with all the latest sports scores and standing only a few taps away. Don’t even know what teams are close? Click the “LocalTap” to see all the scores for teams close by.
7. WordPress - Early in your career is a great time to be blogging as a Gen Y young professional and the Wordpress App makes it that much easier. Now if they only had comment moderation onthe go it would be perfect…
8. Google Mobile App - Don’t leave home with this localized version of google for everything from searching your contacts to learning more about a business or contact.
9. Puluwai - As I have detailed in a series of posts, I am looking to purchase a house or condo sometime in the future (as are many other young professionals). This application uses the iPhone’s location services to quickly show you houses and condos within your price range wherever you are.
10. Pandora Radio (for fun) - Hailed as the “iPhone’s killer app” by TechCrunch this is a great way for young professionals on the go to discover new music related to their tastes. Tired of the same old tracks from your iTunes? Try Pandora on your next commute.

I don’t know if it is for pro or hipsters but the developpers of my start-up site all ask for one. They pretend they could code with it… The power of good products.
