When should I give my elevator speech?

elevator2 Twice in one week, I rode an elevator with the CEO of a major company. The leader said, “I need to stop asking people how they are doing before 10:30 in the morning.”

The comment made me realize—we’re all human, from the entry-level employees to the very top leaders of an organization. This comment comes after first quarter profit reports were made public. I am sure there is a lot on the business leader’s mind with the tough economy. Perhaps the CEO is thinking about a nice weekend with family. Perhaps the person is thinking about a whole handful of things

This experience made me think about my elevator speech. Elevator speeches are necessary. You should always be prepared to tell others how you add value. However, just because you are riding on elevators with people that you want to know, does not mean it is the proper time to self-promote. It is the right time to be professional and self-aware. Be polite and say hello but be in tune with the situation – there is a right time and the wrong time to tell leaders why you are an asset to their business.

Imagine yourself as CEO and people were constantly trying to self-promote. Would you be pleased, annoyed, or a little bit of both when people are giving elevator pitches? Are there any leaders who would like to speak up on this one? While our Newly Corporate audience is targeted towards early-level career professionals, we are pleased to have readers from all experience levels. Sound off in the comments section!

The best time would be when we are asked.

Whilst having the speech ready is important, we should focus on particpating in company activities that will get our talents and contributions noticed. I am sure, this will eventually result in an invitation for us to give the carefully rehearsed speech.
