jrandom42, you are the reason that employees look for a new job.

Your type is the kind I love to bring down, using the companies own rules....

Like a crooked cop, you believe that you are above the law.

Well have I got a surprise for you.......

HR is there to protect the company, not your worthless ass.

I have gladly brought many of your kind to justice, and continue to do so.

Back to cleaning toilets at McDonalds, where you really belong.

Jrandom,

you sound like a total asshole manager. Your a boss but not a true leader and rest assured when a true leader is spotted coming up the ranks you will be replaced.

I bet...
Your momma didn't hug you enough as a kid.
I bet...
Kids made fun of you when you were an awkward kid, as we all were.
I bet...
You aren't even a CIO.
I bet...
You are insecure.
I bet...
If you were a true CIO,
You would have been fired long before you learned what CIO meant.

Good management requires many different skills.

*Know how to communicate.

*Know how to read people of all types.

*Never be judgmental towards others, look in the mirror before making a decision.

*Try to understand why an employee might be a slacker... are they bored?

*Be willing to listen with your ears OPEN...

*Give your people chances... even if you have an inkling that they might fail, they just might prove you wrong.
and... when they do? They've earned your respect and vice versa.

*Let innocent humor happen... (Paper airplanes on occasion... or, intentionally pour your cold coffee in a plant when someone least expects it. Hold up a bunch of pens, pencils, ream of paper, and scream SUPPLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but, don't over do it...

*Let them log off 5 minutes early on a Wednesday, and tell them last one to their car has to logon 5 minutes early tomorrow!

*Don't let projects get a late start. Be aware of your surroundings.

Micromanagement create sour co-workers, I bet postal workers were micromanaged!

This person? You! the one that wants to send people to Alaska? YOU! The one that will treat people HARSHLY? You're very insecure, you need a life, you need to get out from behind your firewalled IT life and smell the roses... There's more to life than micromanagement.
How would it look on a resume when "I was the CIO of 50 people in year 2012. By the years end, I had 23 employees, They all did the job of 50 men!"
Prospective Employer: "Is that so? Why is that?"
@jrandom42 "I got mad, and sent them to Alaska to work.!"
Prospective Employer: "I have 2 more people to interview, we'll let you know."

hahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
just like the other people in here...
your an A******OL@ D**KHE**************D! Mutha

My company is micromanaging, due to low budgets this year.
Nice.

Any attempts to manage or train you will be harshly dealt with? Quit fooling yourself. You clearly have a lot to learn if you believe that you've reached the pinnacle of corporate existence by sleazing your way to CIO status. Your attitude is so poor, I am sure that you simply were pushed into the position because you were friends at the company. You're either a male suffering from little man syndrome, or you're a vindictive woman trying to strike back at the oh-so-horrible patriarchs of society. Whatever that means.

DIAF, thanks.

You sound like the worst kind of manager. A know-it-all "I've been through the trenches and out the other side" shit-stirring power-tripping micromanaging assh*le. I'll bet your employees just love you -- threats like "field support in Alaska" make you sound like a great person to work with.

Idiot.

As a CIO of a growing midsize business, and having come up through the ranks, I am well aware of attempts to “train” or “manage” me. Now, because I’ve been in IT long enough to remember dumb terminals, I’ve seen plenty of things and people pass through, so don’t think this is all new.

My only real requirement is, if you think something can be improved, something is going wrong, or you have some great idea, call me and make an appointment. I'll make the time to hear you out. Bounce it off me and I’ll give honest feedback. If you haven’t thought and planned it through carefully, you will be sent back to your desk to rethink it. If it’s one of those “it sounds so cool” ideas, you may be finding yourself doing field support in Anchorage in December, depending on how hair-brained it is.

Just be direct and talk to me. Any attempt to “train”, “manage” or otherwise manipulate me will be dealt with harshly.

Good points, I can't stand when my boss is using verbal or non-verbal mind-tricks to try and leverage himself. I mean, I know this guy, and he can't stand when his boss...
I've seen it work with my own boss, not so much in initiating changes in the company, as in the way we interact. If I have a positive can-do attitude, he treats me like I can do a lot more things and is willing to hand me more responsibility.
