Forbes Best Places for Business and Careers

Last week, Forbes published another one of it’s annual lists– Best Places for Business and Careers for 2008.

The top five best places for businesses and careers is:

  1. Raleigh, NC
  2. Boise, ID
  3. Fort Collins, CO
  4. Des Moines, IA
  5. Lexington, KY

Raleigh was rated number one because it’s business costs are below the national average and the workforce is highly educated.  It’s a booming area and I can say I would love to work there!  My town was rated 184 out of 200– out of all the Pennsylvania metro cities Erie, the fourth largest in size, is ranked last among other cities.  At least my company is top ranked in other categories (most admired, top fortune 10).  My company is the anchor of the community.

No matter what your rankings are in any business survey, remember that you control your job satisfaction.  Choose to make the most of your town, your work place, and your job and you will be in the best place for you.   While knowing who ranks where can make you an informed business person, don’t let lists run your life.  Use them as tools to help you decide for yourself what is the best place for your business and career.

After seeing Naples, FL in the top 25 of that list, I don’t place ANY trust in this list at all. All the job growth statistics in that list are skewed towards places where the construction boom went bananas(Naples, Las Vegas) and hence at the moment do not have a lot of good job prospects.

    Jen,

    Jen, Good post.

Let’s face it: Erie is a not a good place to do business. Aside from being exceptionally cheap, there is very limited skilled labor, high unemployment, and the city’s infrastructure is out of date. Not to mention the weather is definitely a detriment to attracting workers interested in relocating. Though the 6 weeks of Summer are pretty nice.

I would be interested in seeing the overlap with ‘Places that suck ass to live as a single young professional’ ;)
