I’m not writing this to be snarky, I swear I’m not, but I look at resumes all the time that rely on one of the above “tricks” to try and push it above the pack. Most HR folks and search committees really just want to see the following:
* No spelling errors
* No grammatical errors
* Parallel construction of bullet items (Look in Strunk and White if you need to know what this means)
* Accurate dates of employment
Also, if the ad asks for references, provide them. Don’t write, “References available upon request” — They’ve been requested in the ad. I swear to you, the ten percent of resumes received that do all of the above *always* end up higher in the stack than those that do not, no matter what paper or font are used.

It will depend on what industry you are in and on what level you are. For example if you just graduated from college a manager would probably like to see that you grew throughout your years - since you can’t talk about your experience.
If you are applying to a mid level position or higher you will have to emphasize proven record of good results. Again, how you emphasize would depend on the industry. For example a sales manager would expect to see some hard numbers on the resume.
Just use marketing basics - adapt to your target group, and use whatever tools that work the best on that target group.

The way to make a resume stand out is to customize your resume to reflect how your experiences relate to the job you are applying to. Most people have a resume that stays the same no matter what position they are applying for. By showing how your experience relates to the job will push you to the top.
