Yes, You Need an Elevator Speech
What is an elevator speech? Do I need an elevator speech?
An elevator speech is a well thought collection of summaries that informs others of one’s personal brand, personal ambitions, and professional goals. It may include a brief description of current and/or previous experiences. It should be clear and concise and presented very professionally. It should seem effortless. It should be memorable. One should not ramble. Keep it slow. Consider having different versions for different audiences. 100-15o words is appropriate.
Any professional who wants to advance with their company or network should have an Elevator Speech. A great elevator speech, or elevator pitch, should be practiced so you present yourself well. You should work on your elevator speech frequently. If you really want to impress others, schedule some time on your own calendar to specifically work on your elevator pitch. This is oft-repeated and hardly-ever-heeded advice - but it is excellent advice.
I would only add that in addition to being an important way of being able to present yourself, going through the drill of creating an elevator speech is an effective way to force you to examine and come to an understanding of how you add value. When that light goes on, your elevator speech will become all the more compelling.

This comes in handy when you work on the 54th floor of a 54 floor building. In fact, sometimes I give an elevator speech without even thinking about it. You never know when you’ll walk to the elevator at the same time as the CEO/CFO or the like.

Jason– I agree! I work on the top floor of my building and ride with executives at least once every day.
Everyone should have an elevator pitch but even if you don’t, be conscious of how you act and behave because others are probably watching!
