Beyond Google Page Rank
At the risk of diving too deeply into the rabbit hole of search engine optimization, I wanted to share what was once a key metric for any business working to get their name out on the web, Google Page Rank, and a much better alternative to it.
Google Page Rank is the number assigned to pages on your website by Google’s top-secret algorithm and then used to rank your pages in search results. It is a very aggregate measure and doesn’t necessarily translate to relevant traffic which is why uber-tech-blogger Robert Scoble blogged today on why Google Page Rank is dead. He states,
The problem is that Google can’t really show you your real Page Rank anyway. How would it? It would need to ship you a spreadsheet to explain how you rank for each keyword.
I beg to differ Mr.Scoble, the oft ignored Google Webmaster Tools can do just that! You can view exactly how you rank in all relevant search terms and see where most of your hits are coming from. It will even allow you to download them in a spreadsheet format!
For bloggers, this is a great way to see how effective your focus has been in bringing in new readers through searches and for businesses it can really help gage your SEO efforts. Google Webmaster Tools are invaluable for any business seeking to go beyond the simple Page Rank metric.
