Acquired! Days 4-6

The dust is starting to settle. We know that our daily work lives won’t change drastically until next year. They need to close out all fourth quarter sales, so they don’t want to unsettle anything or anyone. I feel like now is the time to start making moves, but I’m not exactly sure what to do. Looking for advice, I reached out to a former boss of mine (who happens to be a CIO at one of the worlds largest corporations) and he said that acquisitions usually open doors for high performers. He said I was a high performer, so I shouldn’t have anything to worry about. This made me feel good, but it didn’t exactly offer the tactical advice I was after.

I decided to step back from the situation and try to see the big picture. I realized that one arm of our business is poised for the most growth. In the next two years it is likely that it will become the most important business unit in the company. With this in mind, I contacted the product manager. I told him that I thought his business unit would be the best one to be in after the acquisition. I told him that if his team was going to grow and if he needed leadership in the US, that I was ready to fill that role. I was worried that this would sound a bit rushed. I was, after all, asking for a job that didn’t yet exist. However, his response was overwhelmingly positive. He said that he will keep me in mind, especially since he also anticipates massive growth. Is this what it means to think two steps ahead? We shall see.

This is part of the Acquired! series.
