Things to Remember When Traveling for Business
As someone new to the corporate world, you may be asked to travel a lot. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the road.
- Know your companies travel policy - you don’t want to get into an HR dispute over some dumb T&L mistakes.
- Get a credit card that rewards you - there’s a good chance you’ll be asked to book travel expenses on your personal card before getting reimbursed at a later date. You might as well earn some points while you’re at it.
- Register for frequent flier miles - as you think about the flight you’re going to book, go to the website of that airline and register for their frequent flier program. Then hoard those points.
- Get a good seat on the plane - it’ll only take one crappy flight to Europe for you to realize the importance here. Check out seatguru.com before you book.
- Check the location of your hotel on a map - I recently got burned on this one. I flew into Brussels and booked the Crown Plaza based on a recommendation… well there are three Crown Plazas in Brussels. My commute to the office was 45 minutes when it could have been 2.
- Clear your T&L ASAP - if you’re getting reimbursed, file those receipts as soon as you can. Sure, you like your company, but you’d rather be the one earning interest on that money (so get it back quick!).
Also, watch out for airport idiots. Did we miss something?? Give us your best tips in the comments section.

Minimize your number of frequent flier numbers. Most big airlines are members of one of the following alliances. You can get a single number for each group, and then your points will apply to all airlines in that group. This is especially helpful for international travelers.
Oneworld Alliance:
American Airlines
British Airways
more…
Skyteam:
Northwest
Continental
more…
Star Alliance:
United
U.S. Airways
