After Work in Seattle: Fremont Oktoberfest

One of the microbrewers at the Fremont Oktoberfest Due to the fact that I am of partial German descent and a firm believer in the stress relieving power of beverages brewed of barely and hopps, I decided to continue my exploration of Seattle with a trip to the Fremont Oktoberfest last night.

To quote from the Fremont Oktoberfest site:

In old Germany, the brewing season began with the fall harvest of barley and hops and any beer left at harvest time had to be consumed before the new beer arrived. September was designated as the time to drink-up all of last season’s beer. It officially became Oktoberfest in 1810, when Ludwig I, the Crown Prince of Bavaria declared a 16-day celebration in commemoration of his wedding.

A beer taste at the Fremont Oktoberfest After grabbing a quick bite, a newfound compatriot of mine from work, Christine, and I headed to the festival grounds by bus. She pointed me to this useful Seattle bus trip planner site for future adventures on public transportation. When we got there we paid $25 for a small commemorative tasting glass and 11 chips (you get 3 extra chips if you get there during happy hour between 5 and 6) . The chips were good for 6 oz samples of any of the 75 microbrews available at the event. The grounds were just a section of the street and were not that festive (this Milwaukeean had been hoping for some polka music) but, the beer made up for it. I tried 9 beers while I was there from a delicious chocolate stout to IPAs to my favorite, the Lazy Boy Belgian Golden Ale. The Belgian Golden Ale not only tasted of smooth, robust hopps, it packed the serious punch to be expected of a Belgian ale and the slightly citrusyChristine at the Fremont Oktoberfest aftertaste of an IPA. Definitely my favorite local Washington beer thus far.

Bottom line: Go to Fremont Oktoberfest for the beer, not the polka, drindls and lederhosen. If you like microbrews, it’s a must.

Blake - I am green with envy.

Brandon - It’s hard to beat the brew city plus, we don’t have oceans and mountains to distract us but the micro-brew environment is bigger here due to a wider customer base. I can’t say that the ones I have tried here are necessarily any better than MKE but, there is definitely a wider selection due to a bigger market. Now, why does one need a selection of 40 local IPAs? Thats for you to decide.
