Seattle Beer: Henry Weinhard’s Blue Boar

Henry Weinhard's Blue Boar One of the advantages of moving from Milwaukee to Seattle that I am just beginning to explore is the entirely new beerosphere. This, the first of many posts on my beerventures is to highlight the psuedo-microbrewer Henry Weinhard’s. When it comes to macro brewed taste, I am partial to Miller Brewing Company’s products, I worked for them for a year as an intern and went through college in Milwaukee so I have more reasons to like their beers than just the superior taste.

A little know fact about Henry Weinhard’s is the it is owned by Miller Brewing Company, you also are unable to obtain it outside of the northwest and some areas of the western part of the United States. Why? This distribution choice was made by Miller in order to prevent Henry Weinhard’s and Leinenkugal’s from cannibalizing each other’s markets. So, although I got a few tastes while working for Miller, the availability of one of my favorite brews, Henry Weinhard’s Blue Boar, is pretty exciting. It is now brewed by contract at another brewing company in Washington, for the full story check out the Wikipedia page.

Regardless of history and sales decisions, Henry Weinhard’s Blue Boar is one of my top three beers overall. It is crisp, not too hoppy and is not too heavy on the tongue, a sensation that afflicts many pale ales. It definitely has an all-night drinkability to it that many microbrews lack.

Here are the stats:

ABV: 4.6%
Calories: 144/12oz
Bitterness Units: 14.0

So, if your travels bring you to the pacific northwest and you are looking for a real beer that you can drink most of the night, give Henry Weinhard’s Blue Boar a try.
